# Chat with Document (via Notion)

> Keep a Documents database in Notion so Notis can compare uploaded files with your Notion pages, save summaries and contract details, and file action items as tasks.

Use a Notion **Documents** database as the home for the files you send to Notis, so every summary, takeaway, and action item lands in your Notion workspace.

## What this setup does

Notis reads and writes your Notion databases. With a dedicated Documents database, Notis can:

* Compare an uploaded document with pages and databases in your Notion workspace

* Save uploaded files and the summaries generated from them to your Documents database

* Save key takeaways to your Notes database and contract details to your Contracts database

* Turn action items into tasks in your Notion Tasks database

## Step 1: Set up your Documents database in Notion

The Notis Second Brain template includes a [Documents database](/get-started/notion) where Notis can save uploaded files and the notes generated from them.

  Add a description to the database telling Notis when to file things there — for example: "*Save here every contract, brief, or PDF I share with you, along with a short summary."* Field-level descriptions sharpen the storage logic even further. [Not sure how to do this?](/get-started/notion)

## Step 2: Ask Notis to use it

Combine the document with your Notion data:

> *Compare this PDF with my Notion product brief.*

> *Compare this proposal with the one we sent last quarter (in my Documents database).*

> *Match the action items to existing tasks in my Tasks database.*

> *Use this PDF and my Brand Kit page in Notion.*

Save the output to Notion:

> *Save the summary to my Notes database.*

> *Add the contract details to my Contracts database.*

> *Create tasks for every action item in this document.*

Notis writes the structured output into the right Notion database based on what you ask for.

## Automation: auto-summarize forwarded documents into Notion

The [auto-summarize automation](/guides/chat-with-document#auto-summarize-forwarded-documents) files every forwarded document and its summary into your Documents database, and creates tasks in your Tasks database when the document contains action items. With the Second Brain template connected, both land in Notion without you lifting a finger after forwarding.

## Troubleshooting

* **Notis saves to the wrong database:** Add a description to the Documents database saying which files belong there, and name the target database in your message, for example "my Documents database in Notion". See [Database instructions](/notion/database-instructions).

* **Notis can't find your Notion pages:** Make sure the page or database is [connected to Notis](/notion/connect-notion).
