# Manage Expenses (via Notion)

> Keep your expenses in a Notion database so Notis can store each receipt with its merchant, date, amount, client, and category, and run a weekly review on it.

Use a Notion **Expenses** database as the home for your receipts, so Notis can save every expense it extracts from a photo and keep the original receipt attached to the entry.

## What this setup does

Notis reads and writes your Notion databases. With a dedicated Expenses database, Notis can:

* Create an entry for each receipt photo you send, with merchant, date, amount, and payment method

* Update the entry with the client, project, category, and billable status you add by message

* Attach the original receipt image to the Notion entry

* Run a weekly review over the entries and link back to each Notion page

## Step 1: Set up your Expenses database

The Notis Second Brain already contains an [**Expenses**](/get-started/notion) database set up for you.

  If you choose to use an accounting tool such as QuickBooks or Xero, make sure to delete the bug tracker database in the Notis Second Brain template to avoid any conflicts.

## Step 2: Send receipts and add context

Send a photo of your receipt to Notis, then specify the client and project:

> *This is for Acme Corp – Product Launch Offsite.*

> *Mark this as billable.*

> *Category is Meals & Entertainment.*

Notis saves the expense to your Notion Expenses database and updates the entry with the client, project, category, and billable status.

## Automation: weekly expense review

The [weekly "expenses to review" digest](/guides/manage-expenses#weekly-expenses-to-review-digest-schedule) works on your Notion Expenses database: it finds entries from the last 14 days with missing or suspicious data and sends you a digest grouped by problem type. Each item in the digest includes a link to its Notion page, so you can fix it in one click.

## Troubleshooting

* **Notis can't find your expenses:** Make sure the database is named "Expenses" and is [connected to Notis](/notion/connect-notion).

* **Entries land in the wrong database:** Name the target database in your message, for example "my Expenses database in Notion". See [Database instructions](/notion/database-instructions).
